Looks like we have some new Clive Barker-y film goodness coming out way. Youtube TrailerAnd this is how Wikipedia describes it: Midnight Meat Train is a horror film based on Clive Barker's 1984 short story of the same name, which can be found in Volume One of Barker's collection Books of Blood. The film will follow a photographer who attempts to track down a serial killer dubbed the "Subway Butcher" and discovers more than he bargained for under the city streets. And, as an intresting coda, the Wiki article ends thusly: As of this entry, The Midnight Picture Company was busy shooting The Book of Blood, the next film adaptation from the anthology of short stories that spawned Midnight Meat Train. That certainly sounds to me like they are interesting in adapting much more Barker, and the more exposure and sales he gets, the more likely we are to getting more Nightbreed!

This is apparently being released only fittingly in a few markets... in some places it might already be out. Anybody going to check it out? I certainly am!

I just hope that the failure of MMT to come out on film doesn't mean a major slump-time for horror flicks...

yeah, seems utter turgid crap like Date Movie, Meet The Spartans and Disaster Movie still get to the big screens no matter what...... and will probably continue to do so at the expense of 'real' cinema. serious yo. who goes to watch that rubbish? who? i don't know a single person.
wide screen hdtv's and home entertainment systems may be one thing, but there's truly little as special as 200 people simultaneously jumping from their seats and hiding behind their popcorn.

Fear.net is going to debut it October 1st. ;D www.fearnet.com/MCNewsDetailPage.aspx?catid=30&mid=15894I hope the City Fathers made it to the film. Judging by reviews, it might be too much to hope that they did them justice, but I'll be happy if that part of the story was left intact. Now I just have to occupy myself for six days... ~ Cobweb

just downloaded Clive's pre-screening presentation (from some festival) - which i'll save till the 31st so i can watch them both together!
woo-hoo!!! the wait is nearly over!!
......in other non-CB news, after hearing much about them i finally watched Ricky 6 and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, but i'm still waiting for Bad Biology, Trick R Treat and Fanboys...

The good news: The movie sticks pretty closely to the original story. The bad news: It doesn't go into any detail as to what the Fathers are, or show them as more than cannibalistic humanoids.
*Sigh* I'm happy that a new film from one of Clive Barker's stories was released, and that he's pleased with it. I'm perturbed that it didn't get a proper release, though, and in the age of CGI there's simply no excuse for short changing the monsters at the end of the story.

I wonder if they thought that audiences couldn't buy more than one kind of story in the film...

seems the theatrical and initial dvd versions will be cut. how annoying is that??? there's some guy on imdb - ok this isn't the most reliable source but hey don't shoot the messenger and all that - and anyways he says that the current version was cut in 9 places to get its rating... and to expect an unrated dvd at some point in the future.
lame. now i have to wait longer.....
oh and the uk theatrical realease schedule is as much of a joke as the us one was. i live in london and the closest screening is manchester or somewhere equally distant ...not that i'd go that far anyway to see a compromised and censored work.
and so what did i watch at my local on halloween instead? Saw f****** 5! utter rubbish. one of the worst films i have seen in the cinema - and that says something (see my posts on DiaryOTD!). gutted.

You can never tell if the "unrated" version will ever get released, like how the full Kill Bill may be what has already been released more or less...

Well, i finally got to see it - the unrated version - and i'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint in the slightest. I also watched a presentation by CB, given before the US screening, where he told the audience pretty much what he thought of Lionsgate's treatment of the movie. How the hell did this not get a wider theatrical release? So, anyways, good film, good story, quite violent, well made - i don't normally like CG bloodsprays but this time it was handled well enough - definitely check it out. It was well worth the wait!

Finally watched it. I'll give it a solid A for effort, but there were two things I didn't like: the overuse of CGI over practical effects in some "eye-popping" sequences, and the first third going into the rest of the movie. The beginning had cool elements, but I thought that the domestic drama didn't come off as well as it could have - not the actors fault, but I think a fault of adapting the short story to feature length film. But enough about negatives - onto the positives. The story is very weird & compelling, and I could see the final set-piece as a surviving part of Midian, or perhaps somebody establishing another colony. For people who have read the short story - what were the weird growths on Mahogany? Why was he saving them? And what is the whole thing about the City Fathers (I think I can imagine how it would play out in the story, but maybe not). Final question: why was the photographer chosen for the "new role" that he was? The killings were largely effective, and the nightmare, dreamlike atmosphere really pulls the viewer in. Vinnie Jones made an effective psychopath, and there was a solid since of gore (probably the worst being the prolonged death of the friend). Brooke Shields was even effective. And here is some more good news: the same team is adapting some more stories of Barkers and calling it Books of Blood: Book of Blood is a Horror Film currently in production based on two short stories by Clive Barker, one of the same title, published in Volume One of the collection Books of Blood and the other in Volume Six of the collection called On Jerusalem Street: A Postscript. The plot features a young man who finds a place of transportation of souls in the afterlife. It is being directed by John Harrison. Leading actors include Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, and Reg Fuller. Other actors include Doug Bradley, James Watson, Simon Bamford, and Romana Abercromby.

It's great!! Made me jump out of my skin once or twice - but most impressively it actually captures some of that bottled-magic Barker-esque damnation from the first Hellraiser film. The environment is dripping with dread and anticipation, the characters are unnerved and unnerving and the story is creepy enough to stay with you long after the credits have rolled. It's a definite DVD purchase - as is MMT - though i prefer this film hands down. Seek it out!
