One Night In The Alley
It was Halloween Night, 2008, and Sandy was running from something she couldn't even see.
She had come into this creepy, dilapidated alleyway as a dare. A friendly dare from a bunch of goth wannabes who were once her friends. ONCE. And now something was pursuing her. Something that obviously knew her name.
"Sandy..."
Another voice, an animal-like growl.
"Sssaaaannnndeeee...."
After running a mile in the fog-filled alley, the two voices took on an eerie quality to them, a kind of sing-song tone that made Sandy tremble as she sprinted.
"San-dy....."
"Oh, San-deeeee....."
After that, the two enigmas began to laugh mischevously, like two children who just played a good prank. The laughter bounced off the walls of the alley as Sandy spotted the possible exit.
But it wasn't. It was a dead end, layered with red bricks.
The laughter stopped. The sudden silence made Sandy jump.
Then, A noise behind her. A soft thump, as if a set of satin shoes with feet in them dropped from a five-story building. She turned to face the noise, but couldn't see a thing. It was pitch black, a shaft of a cloud slicing out the last bits of the moon.
As she stepped backwards from the sound, another soft thump came from behind her, near the alley wall.
But, before she could react, a strong arm hooked around her neck and the first voice, soft, but insane nonetheless, whispered into her ear.
"Hi, cutie."
The man in front giggled quietly.
"Say Hi, Lude."
"Hi, Lude!" the man in the alley responded with gusto. His voice had a quality to it all it's own. It wasn't insane, but it had a sort of childish quality that reminded her of Harley Quinn from Batman, although it sounded like a boy, not a girl.
Then, as he stepped forward, the moonlight came back. Sandy's eyes went wide, but before she could scream, the other man's finger went onto her lip, silencing her.
"Shhhh. Don't scream. You might...provoke him"
The man in the alley was not a man but a demon, maybe the devil himself, with blackish skin and curved horns protruding from his head.
But, his clothes were the color of a jester's.
And then the devil lookalike stuck out his tongue and gave her a raspberry.
He's obviously not the devil, Sandy thought.
"Are you....Satan?" she asked, just to be sure.
"Who are ya callin' Satan, Sandy?" said the devil, "Th' name's Lude."
"Call me Leroy, Sandy-girl." the voice at her ear whispered, keeping a steady arm around her. "Aw, you're so cute, hon." He then directed his hands to Sandy's bare stomach area and began to tickle her. "Cootchie-cootchie-coo, Cootchie-cootchie-coo!" But Sandy felt more like crying than laughing.
"Are you both....monsters?" Sandy asked, under her nervous giggling.
"Let me put it this way, nosey-pants....Have you ever heard of a happy little neverland called Midian?" Lude said, moving closer.
"Aw, we don't need to tell this chick the whole thing about us," Leroy protested, "Besides, that's old school. 1989, as a matter of fact."
"C'mon, Leroy, the schmootzie-poo wants to hear the facts," Lude said, clutching at her shoulder. "So why don't we tell her?" He licked her ear, giggling.
"Suit yourself, chowderhead."
Sandy felt Leroy and Lude edge closer to her pierced ears, feeling their hot breath.
"Y'see, it's like this..."
And they whispered the whole story about their race.
And with their words came compassion, understanding.
How dare we. How dare the human race.
She now knew what that movie was about. That movie that caught her eye at some Saturday Matinee somewhere. She now had to buy it. Buy it and watch it. And she would try to find Leroy and Lude again. Them and the rest of the Nightbreed. She knew they were expecting her.
