When I read the Abarat books (great books by the way for any age!) I couldn't help but see a few things that reminded me of H.P. Lovecraft's "Dream-Quest of unknown Kadath". Anyone else have the same experience? Maybe he got some inspiration from some of Lovecraft's stories.

I haven't read anything by either of those, but i'd like to. Can you recommend any books to start with?

If you've never read any Lovecraft, I'd suggest a short story called "The Shunned House", just because it's the first one of his I read, and I thought it really packed a wallop. It details a house with a history of death and depravation, and the people who try to discover what's really going on in the basement. I think his stories work best late at night when your mind is closer to a dream state, and it all seems so real....

Yeah, can't believe I've never read any myself..... ...definitely sounds like i ought to!!
Cheers - i'll make that story my first port of call.
I did play the Call Of Cthulhu board/rp game a few times with a mate at school in the very early nineties, although what it actually entailed i couldn't even begin to remember now.
